Is Stevia Keto Friendly? A Simple Guide to Sweeteners on Keto

Short answer: yes. Stevia is sugar free and virtually calorie free, so it fits a keto or low-carb diet. The key is to choose a blend without added sugars such as dextrose or maltodextrin.

Why stevia works on keto

A ketogenic diet keeps carbohydrates very low. Sugar is almost pure carbohydrate, so it's one of the first things to go. Steviol glycosides, the sweet part of the stevia leaf, are used in such tiny amounts that they add no meaningful carbs or calories.

What about erythritol?

Most granulated stevia products, including SUGARLESS® Organic Stevia, use erythritol as a base so they're easy to measure. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that is largely not digested for energy. That's why many people on keto subtract it when counting net carbs. Check the nutrition panel on the pack and count in the way that suits your plan.

Like other polyols, eating a lot of erythritol at once may cause digestive discomfort in some people, so enjoy it as part of a balanced diet.

What to check on the label

  • Avoid fillers with sugar: dextrose, maltodextrin and glucose are sometimes used to bulk out cheaper sweeteners and do add carbs.
  • Look for a short ingredient list. SUGARLESS Organic Stevia contains just two ingredients: organic erythritol and organic steviol glycosides.
  • Check certification. Our stevia and monk fruit sweeteners are Australian Certified Organic, vegan and gluten free.
